The adaptation of the child to the Montessori Way of Life

Safety and trust are the two key words that allow every child to develop, discover the world and express their unique personality.

And all this under the prism of respect and love for the little child, who, as M. Montessori said, “deserves the best”.

No matter how small or big a 2-3-4-year-old child is, the kindergarten is his first step into the world, his second home after his own.

This step must be stable and sure, done with joy, with the time and rhythm that each child needs.

And because “the beginning is half of everything” the adaptation to the nursery school is the A and Z for his subsequent course.

Our main concern is the emotional safety of children. In order for a child to learn by playing, create, express himself, choose and develop, he needs to feel trust.

For these reasons, we consider it necessary for the parent to be present in the classroom during the adjustment.

The role of the parent

The role of the parent is to facilitate with his presence the adaptation, to create the bridge between home and school.

It is necessary for him to feel and show confidence in the school environment in order to transfer the same feelings to the child.

It is important for the parent accompanying the child to understand that just as each child is unique, so is the adaptation process for each child.

Procedure

Parents are fully informed about the adaptation process by the educators. All the stages of adaptation are explained to them in detail, as well as the attitude we will have towards the child.

1st stage

The parent comes to class with the child and stays with him throughout. The educator invites the child to some activity so that he slowly creates a relationship. This stage lasts for a while and the child leaves even if he wants to sit more in order to leave happy and looking forward to the next day.

2nd stage

The teacher informs the child that the accompanying parent will leave the classroom for a while but will be inside the school and will be available if the child asks for him. We always tell the truth in order to strengthen the child’s sense of security and trust in the teacher’s words and actions.

3rd stage

The parent is informed by the pedagogues that he can greet the child and is removed outside the school, but being nearby so that he can return if the child asks. The child’s stay is gradually extended according to the child’s rate of adaptation, until he is emotionally ready to be at school, without the presence of the parent.

‘This is how a smooth adaptation of the child to the school environment is completed.

Our educators are available to help parents and children make a smooth transition from home to school.
